If you’re looking for amazing Vegan brunch in Toronto and you’ve never had an opportunity to try one of the handful of Fresh restaurants located in the city, you’ve been missing out.
Would I say it’s the best? I don’t know! That’s up to personal preference, in my opinion. But Fresh certainly does offer a HUGE variety of options to choose from – from pancakes, to noodle and rice bowls, to wraps and sandwiches, and even to dessert (which is a great breakfast choice, in my opinion).
They promise delicious, wholesome, plant-based food from scratch – you can guarantee that anything you order here is Fresh af.
This past weekend, my partner and I visited Fresh – it was the 5th time I’d been to the restaurant, and only the second for brunch. I recommend everyone visits the local “chain” at some point if they have the opportunity to.
But before I continue, why did I call Fresh a “chain”? Simply because the Restaurant has seen incredible expansion in the last few years in the city! There are currently 5 locations in the city – on Bloor, Spadina, Crawford, Eglington, and Front. Their restaurants and located conveniently to TTC and in a variety of neighbourhoods around the city.
Their story is also pretty neat (you can read about it here) – so if you want great food with some cool history, this is the place to go!
BUT I DIGRESS – Back to the food.
Fresh serves brunch between 10:30am and 3:00pm on the weekends, and you can choose between pancakes, pancake platters, a tex mex tortilla scramble, and a “full breakfast” featuring everything from tofu scramble to home fries and baked beans. You’re also free to add any sides to whatever brunch option you choose.
But the beautiful thing is you can also order off of their regular lunch/dinner menu during brunch hours, as well.
Their pancakes are fluffy and sweet, their tempeh bacun is smoky but not too rich, and their tofu scramble is creamy and fluffy. I always tell myself I’m going to get something different for brunch but… I’ll always go back to the pancake platter.
I also had a really amazing Goji Berry Latte when I was there – It was sweet and oddly but deliciously caremel-y – and the cinnamon in the recipe adds a really nice and warm spice to it. You can add maple syrup, agave, or honey (not vegan, though) to your drinks as sweetener, and I always tend to go for the maple syrup because I like the richer flavour it adds with the sweetness.
I don’t have a photo of it sadly, but my partner got the tex mex tortilla scramble – tortillas, tofu scramble, cilantro, avocado, hot sauce, beans, rice…. the tortillas were crunchy and it was a great combination of flavours. I still personally prefer sweets over savoury food for breakfast, but to each their own.
And the best part?
I’m an adult and I can eat cake for breakfast.
You can order their dessert any time – we got it around 1:00pm but we could have ordered it at 10:30am if we’d been there at that point.
I LOVE carrot cake and my partner decided to get a piece to finish off the meal. The nutmeg and cinnamon are really prominent in their recipe, but not overwhelmingly so – I actually really enjoy how “spicey” their cake is compared to ones I’ve had in the past. I haven’t actually had carrot cake since I went vegan, so it was amazing to get a taste of that cream cheese frosting, too. It’s my favourite kind of cake and my partner knew it, so I’m so glad I finally got to try it. I would go back specifically for the cake, only.
But what I’m trying to tell you, is that I basically just ate cake for breakfast.
But the beauty of Fresh is that you can do that, or you can choose one of their much healthier options if you want to!
Most of what they serve is relatively good for you – but when you eat two pancakes the size of your face and half a piece of carrot cake for breakfast…. not so much.
With all of the good things I have to say about Fresh, it certainly can be pricey sometimes so that’s something to definitely keep in mind before making a reservation or popping in for lunch – and it can get quite busy, especially on the weekends. We got lucky with how many tables of two were leaving as we arrived, but I know that’s not always the case.
And what’s brunch without getting a little extra? It’s nice enough to dress up a little when you go but casual enough to really just not worry about.
Fresh is easily one of my favourite restaurants in the city, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for vegan food with a lot of variety, creativity, and flavour.
